After 5 days in Luang Prabang (Laos) we have decided to move on. We did want to the visit the capital, Vientiane, however the journey is a 10-11 hour bus ride on roads that are not very good. Everyone says it’s a nightmare journey. As the crow flys it’s only 134 miles. Speaking with other travellers, they say it’s not worth it.
So we decided to move on to Siem Reap in Cambodia, Angkor Wat and all that cultural stuff. Lasting memories of Luang Prabang will be of the Mekong river and Buddhist monks: dozens of them in their orange robes walking in the city (laptops in shoulder bags and Blackberrys to their ears). Then seeing them bathing in the Mekong whilst we cruised lazily at sunset along the mighty Mekong river (12th longest river in the world at 2600 miles).
