Siem Reap – Angkor Wat

Siem Reap is a must visit place for a lot of  backpackers and they certainly influence what is the top attraction here: Angkor Wat is the 8th wonder of the world! On Trip Advisor what is the most popular?  It’s All Terrain Vehicle, quad biking for the day.

Wat Facts: Angkor  is one of the most important archaeological sites in South-East Asia. Stretching over some 400 km2, including forested area, Angkor Archaeological Park contains the magnificent remains of the different capitals of the Khmer Empire, from the 9th to the 15th century. They include the famous Temple of Angkor Wat and, at Angkor Thom, the Bayon Temple with its countless sculptural decorations. UNESCO has set up a wide-ranging programme to safeguard this symbolic site and its surroundings.

So, we arranged a taxi and agreed a pick up time of 5:30 am. We wanted to see the sun rise over Angkor Wat. We arrived at the destination and walked across the processional bridge that crosses the moat and took our position inside the great wall along with hundreds of other tourists. It was slightly cloudy, but the effect was spectacular.  We then explored the ancient Wat, truly remarkable considering when it was built.

We also visited more ancient Wats, some undergoing considerable conservation work.  One was the Wat Ta Prohm that featured in the film Tomb Raiders.
