The Moat – Chiang Mai

We decided to walk a small section of the moat from Katam Corner to Taepae Gate.

Some facts about the moat:

Chiang Mai was built in 1296 as a walled city surrounded by a moat. The old city was roughly 1.5km square. Whilst a good portion of the original city wall has collapsed the four corner bastions are still intact along with various other sections. The original moat is still in use to this day. Chiang Mai city is basically made up now of the old city (within the walled area) and the new city which has grown up around it.

Within the city walls there are a mix of restaurants, hotels, guest houses, travel shops, coffee shops, massage shops, bars, the women’s prison and it seems like a Wat on every corner. It was a bit of a shock when we turned down a road and nearly bumped into a man dressed as a WW2 Japanese soldier. He even carried a gun.  I think I should have told him the war was over and he could go home now.

  1. Hi Neil
Thanks for a bright start to a morning which is blowing a gale, horizontal rain is hurtling past the window and there are power cuts everywhere!
Chiang Mai looks a great place to visit – will add it to the list.
    Take care
    Jen and Jim
